What we did: 3D reconstruction
Year: 2024-2025

A fragment of 13th-century life in Ida-Viru County, Estonia, has been brought to life through a detailed 3D reconstruction. Creative Herbert OÜ contributed to the digital reconstruction of a wooden hillfort that existed around the year 1200, transforming archaeological research into an immersive and visually accessible format.

The 3D model is based on archaeological evidence and expert analysis, combining scientific data, comparative studies, and informed reconstruction methods commonly used in digital archaeology and heritage visualization.

Archaeological Basis and Reconstruction Methodology

The archaeological data used for the reconstruction was provided by archaeologists Kristo Siig and Ragnar Saage. As the site represents a wooden hillfort dating to circa 1200, the reconstruction integrates multiple sources:

This multidisciplinary approach ensures that the 3D reconstruction is both scientifically grounded and visually coherent, reflecting best practices in digital cultural heritage.

Buildings and Construction Features of the Hillfort

The inner courtyard of the hillfort contains two distinct types of structures: Above-ground residential buildings and sunken-featured buildings.

The above-ground residential buildings are based on the Rõuge-type ancient farmstead houses, which were common in prehistoric Estonia. These structures illustrate everyday living conditions and domestic architecture of the period. Construction principles characteristic of the Rõuge building tradition are also visible in the defensive structures.

The sunken-featured buildings were reconstructed directly from archaeological excavation results, providing insight into functional spaces and construction techniques used within the hillfort.
